12-year-old Imani Miles’ Apple Watch reportedly kept sending alarms, which her mother, Jessica Kitchen, later realized were caused by an unusually high heart rate.

A 12-year-old girl in the U.S. who had cancer was able to get treatment on time thanks to her Apple Watch, according to a recent story published in Detroit Hour. 12-year-old Imani Miles’ Apple Watch reportedly kept sending alarms, which her mother, Jessica Kitchen, later realized were caused by an unusually high heart rate. For an appendectomy, Miles was transferred to a medical facility.

When users cannot access their phones, the Apple Watch calls emergency services, which notifies first responders in time for them to provide medical assistance. This has saved the lives of several people. The sensors in the wearables, which track things like heart rate and ECG readings, have also helped many users detect health problems.

According to the report, surgeons also found a neuroendocrine tumor on her appendix, a condition not commonly seen in children. Moreover, the mother told the publication, “If she didn’t have that Watch, it could have been a lot more.” There is no mention of which Apple Watch the child was using.

This is not the first time Apple Watch has come up with something like this; there have also been several reports in the past: In 2020, a 25-year-old man’s Apple Watch alerted him that his resting heart rate of 210 beats per minute was extremely high. This allowed him to visit a doctor, who advised him that an atrial ablation was needed to stop the atrial flutter.

Although medical professionals removed the tumor, the 12-year-old had to undergo another surgery because cancer had already spread to other parts of her body. According to the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, Miles’ surgery went well, and she is recovering at home.
