Chinese engineers have successfully conducted hot firing tests of a new powerful engine for super-heavy rockets planned for lunar missions.
According to the engine’s developers, the closed-cycle rocket engine uses liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen as propellants and can produce 25 tons of thrust, making it the most powerful engine of its type ever built. He’s one of those engines.
The engine was developed by the Liquid Propulsion Laboratory, owned by China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), China’s largest state-owned space company.
The new engine is about three times more powerful than the most powerful liquid hydrogen-oxygen upper stage engine currently in use in China.
The Long March 9 is currently scheduled for test flights around 2030 and will be unnecessary.
The engine is believed to be designed to power the third stage of China’s planned Long March 9 rocket. The rocket, which is being developed for missions to the Moon and Mars, will rival NASA’s legendary Saturn V and a larger version of the US Space Agency’s gigantic new space rocket, the Space Launch System.
CASC is already testing new, larger and more powerful engines for the first and second stages of the Long March 9. So, this new test is another step for China to significantly improve its space launch capabilities.
But China is reviewing its plans for super-heavy rockets and is considering modifying them for reuse. His March 9 presentation of a new reusable rocket concept by a senior Chinese space official followed SpaceX’s progress on reusable rockets and a massive new starship system.
