What is PCB?

PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) are man-made chemicals that were used extensively in industry. These chemicals have been banned since 1979 due to their toxic effects. However, they still persist in nature and continue to cause harm.

PCBs are lipophilic meaning they dissolve in fats and oils. They tend to accumulate in fatty tissues and biomagnify in the food chain.

How do we know if our fish/meat is contaminated with PCBs?

The best way to test for PCB contamination is to use a method called enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).

ELISA uses antibodies to detect specific substances. In this case, antibodies are used to bind to the PCB molecule and then a second antibody binds to it. If the first antibody was bound to PCB, the second antibody would bind to it and give off a signal.

This signal could be detected using a colorimetric reaction. A positive result indicates that the sample contains PCB.

What are the symptoms of PCB poisoning?

Symptoms of PCB poisoning include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, headaches, mental confusion, memory loss, depression, fatigue, weight gain, seizures, coma, and death.

Is eating seafood safe?

Yes! Eating seafood does not pose any risk of PCB poisoning. The levels of PCBs in seafood are much lower than those present in humans.

Can we eat meat without getting sick?

No. Meat may contain higher concentrations of PCBs than fish. However, the levels of PCBs found in meat are still low enough that they pose no threat to human health.

Are there any foods that are safe to eat?

Yes! There are many foods that are safe to consume. Examples include eggs, milk, and vegetables.

Where can I get tested for PCBs?

You can go to your local doctor’s office or hospital for testing. You can also contact your state department of environmental quality or your county health department.

Chemical Composition Of A Cell : –

Chemical composition of a cell includes the following elements: Carbon (C), Hydrogen (H), Oxygen (O), Nitrogen (N), Sulphur (S), Chlorine (Cl) and Phosphorous (P). All these elements are present in equal proportion inside the cells

  • Carbon
  • Hydrogen
  • Oxygen
  • Nitrogen
  • Sulphur
  • Chlorine
  • Phosphorous
  • The chemical element carbon is the basic building block of all living organisms. It is present in all forms of organic compounds.
  • Hydrogen bonds link the structure of many molecules.
  • The oxygen atom has four electrons surrounding it.
  • Nitrogen contains six protons and six neutrons.
