On Saturday, the Northwestern State football team will don its purple uniforms for the first time in almost a year. The Demons will face Lamar in their first home game since November 6, 2021, to kick off Southland Conference play, after concluding the 2021 campaign with back-to-back road contests and beginning the 2022 schedule with three straight away from the Demons’ stadium.
“These young men put in a lot of effort over the year to get four chances to play at Turpin Stadium this year. Since the community has been so supportive of us, we relish the opportunity to present ourselves to them. They’ll be present in force, and we anticipate it”,said senior cornerback William Hooper.
Northwestern State Athletics’ mobile app, which can be downloaded for free for Apple and Android devices, and www.NSUDemons.com both offer free streaming audio for Saturday’s 3:35 p.m. kickoff on ESPN+.
Lamar (0-3) and Northwestern State (0-3) are both looking for their first victories of the year, and the Demons are coming in with three weeks of experience from three completely different road trips. Laird and his players are aware of the advantages of Saturday being the Demons’ first home game and conference game.
Lamar, which spent the 2021 season as a member of the Western Athletic Conference until re-joining the Southland Conference in July, sees Saturday’s matchup as somewhat of a homecoming in a way.
The mindset of the conference opening allowing for a “reset” button of sorts, according to Laird, is that “that’s the message every year, since it is a different season in itself.”
Since Lamar’s programme was resumed in 2011, the Demons have prevailed in seven of nine encounters with the Cardinals. In the Laird era, Northwestern State is 2-0 versus the Cardinals.
Hooper declared, “We don’t take any opponent lightly. “We approach each foe equally. Although it would be good to build on past victories, each day is a fresh start.”
