With a broken finger, Commanders’ Carson Wentz is expected to be out 4-6 weeks, Taylor Heinicke to take his place

Washington Commanders full-back Carson Wentz will be out for about four to six weeks with a broken ring finger on his pitching hand, according to NFL Media. According to Ian Rapoport, he will have surgery on Monday and could be put on the bench because of an injury, meaning he will miss at least the team’s next four games.

The injury occurred during the Commander’s “Thursday Night Football” win over the Chicago Bears. When Wentz made a pass in the second half, defense Justin Jones flexed his fingers after an unsuccessful attempt to make the pass. Wentz was clearly uncomfortable for the rest of the game, but played despite the injury, going 12 of 22 for 99 yards, without touch and without interception. During the season, Wentz had 1,489 passes with 10 touchdowns and 6 interceptions.

With Wentz absent, reserve Taylor Heinicke will take on midfield duties. Heinicke should start at least in games against the Green Bay Packers, Indianapolis Colts, Minnesota Vikings and Philadelphia Eagles. If Wentz is sidelined for six weeks, Heinicke will also be the starter for games against the Houston Texans and Atlanta Falcons.

Heinicke is best known for nearly offending Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during the Super Wild-Card weekend in 2021. The 29-year-old has 22 touchdowns and 18 interceptions in a career that spans the Texas, Carolina Panthers and Commanders.

Wentz’s injury came after the 29-year-old was called up by his coach, as Ron Rivera said the difference between the struggling Commanders and other thriving NFC East teams is in position midfielder position.

Should Heinicke have a difficult time or get injured, the Command team also has rookie winger Sam Howell from North Carolina. He was knocked out by Washington in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft with an overall pick of 144.

Rivera later clarified the comments and apologized to Wentz for creating a distraction. Wentz also commented, saying he was not bothered by the press conference and that the coach spoke to him directly about it.

The Commander is currently in last place in the NFC East with a 2-4 record.
